ANCHOR: Looking for a little light reading this summer?

ANCHOR: WGN’S Money Saving Expert Ilyce Glink has a few suggestions for when you’re sick of those summer beach novels.

GOOD MORNING!!!

ILYCE: It would be nice to while away a few hours on a mystery thriller this summer, but if you’re looking for something that’ll help you find a job or make you a millionaire, I’ve got a few suggestions. Our first book is A BIG LIFE.

A BIG LIFE

ILYCE: This is the story of one of advertising’s all-time greats, Mary Wells Lawrence, and her autobiography shows us the American advertising world from the 1950s through the 1980s, which was perhaps the heyday of zaniness in the ad world.

ILYCE: Lawrence started at Doyle Dane Bernbach, working as a copyrighter’s assistant, and eventually started her own firm where she was responsible for the “Plop Plop Fizz Fizz” Alka Seltzer commercial and gave Braniff Airlines it’s vibrant colors. This book has all sorts of stories about the commercials we’ve grown up with – and it’s very entertainingly written. A must for your beach blanket. Next on our summer reading list is “The Millionaire In You”

Millionaire in You

ILYCE: By Michael Le Bouef. Inside this book LeBouef tells you the ten things you need to do now to have money and the time to enjoy it.

ILYCE: LeBouef believes people get caught in the time/money trap, where if you have time, you don’t have money and if you have money, you don’t have time. He works back to something called a “paycheck mentality,” where people assume that the harder you work, the wealthier you’ll be. Of course, that’s can’t be true – look at all the 20-something dot.com millionaires — or at least the ones who were smart enough to cash out in time. This book has a few good points, worth at least an afternoon on the beach. Our third book is the Internet Guide to Job Hunting.

INTERNET GUIDE TO JOB HUNTING

ILYCE: Co-authored by Francis Roehm, who is a librarian at the Skokie Public Library, and who maintains ChicagoJobs.com, a fantastic resource for job hunters. This book has everything on the site and more. If you’re looking for a job, this is the book to have. Finally, I wouldn’t want you to lie on the beach without anything fun to read, so try this novel:

ALL I COULD GET

ILYCE: “All I Could Get”, by Scott Lasser. Lasser was a bond trader for Lehman Brothers, one of the big investment firms on Wall Street. This is his second book, and it’s the story of — Yes, a trader on Wall Street who has to take a harrowing journey in order to figure out how much is “enough.” The best thing about this book is the insider view of Wall Street that you’ll get. And if you were already suspicious of the market, you will be by the time you finish this novel.
