First, the stock market finally returned to a level not seen since the week before Bear Stearns collapsed. Next, the private sector created 100,000 new jobs, and added together with the public sector, a total of 151,000 or so jobs were created last month. While that was far above what most economists had estimated, the unemployment rate stayed at 9.6 percent because so many people have just thrown up their hands and walked out of the employment market.
