Ilyce Glink on the Clark Howard Show – Jobs and the Economy – July 7, 2011

Jobs and the Economy with Ilyce Glink on the Clark Howard Show July 7, 2011:

It’s midsummer and there’s been somewhat of a welcome slowdown in the news cycle. That said, there’s still plenty of talk about jobs and the economy.

The Labor Department released its monthly jobs report and there was finally some good news. The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time dropped. And as a companion to that, ADP, the large private payroll processor, reported that companies hired 157,000 employees in June, more than twice what was forecast. That’s still not enough to keep up with population growth, let alone permit a recovery of the staggering number of jobs that have lost in the Great Recession, but perhaps we’re finally moving in the right direction.

In other news, HUD reported that qualifying unemployed homeowners will be able to get some help from their lenders. Eligible borrowers can take advantage of up to $50,000 in interest-free loans. The money will assist with mortgage payments for up to two years.

Also, callers dial in to discuss the real price of things made in America. Can True Religion sell jeans for up to $375, when they only cost $56 in raw materials and production to manufacture?
