Ilyce Glink Show – The Great Spending Checklist – October 23, 2011

Rosie Rios and Pam Yip on the Show. The Great Spending Checklist. And as usual, providing personal finance advice, real estate advice and consumer advice on the Ilyce Glink Show October 23, 2011 on WSB Radio.

Earlier this year, I toured around the country giving a series of speeches called “Everyday Money.” The general theme of the conversation was that the decisions you make with your money everyday determine how much of it you’ll have at the end of your years.

Spending and saving, and how much of each to do, are topics that have always preoccupied society. But during the Great Recession, the considerations are that much more intense. Incomes are so unstable, even when you have a job, that every penny literally counts.

I spent some time in Dallas this past week and I enjoyed the privilege of spending a day with Rosie Rios, the U.S. Treasurer, She reports directly to the Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner. We were at the Federal Reserve Bank in the Dallas answering questions posed by industry leaders about the housing market and credit crisis at a breakfast sponsored by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas. I was one of the speakers at the event.

Later in the day, we attended a townhall-style meeting with Pamela Yip, who is frankly one of the great personal finance writers. At the townhall, we discussed a variety of issues pertaining to spending, credit and important financial changes on the horizon. For example, did you know that in 2013, Social Security payments will only be facilitated online and via direct deposit?

How are you spending in the new American economic reality? Will you be able to realize the American Dream? What are you doing to keep yourself and informed, control your budget and maximize your income?
