Every dollar counts. You must be careful with your cash everyday. Even when renting a home you own to a tenant, it helps to save money by doing maintenance yourself. And as usual, providing personal finance advice, real estate advice and consumer advice with Ilyce Glink on the Clark Howard Show July 4, 2012 on WSB Radio.

Happy 4th of July! This is one of my favorite holidays, an amazing day that Sam and I are celebrating in an unconventional way – by cleaning our offices and home.

We’re doing this because Sam is moving his office from a condo we’ve owned for almost 15 years. We’re renting a home to a tenant instead of using it as a business  come August 1, and we’ve accumulated so much stuff.

We could hire someone to help and it’s especially tempting because my teenage boys are away this summer. When I suggested this to Sam he looked at me and said, “Ilyce that could cost real money.”

He’s right. Every dollar counts. When it comes to our cash, we’re still careful about every dollar we spend. Even in this heat, we do our own yard work. We could pay people to do these chores but you have to care.

This conversation with my husband and business partner provided me with a wakeup call. Have we as a nation forgotten that every dollar counts in the aftermath of the Great Recession?
