Creating vision is the key to your success in investment and the housing market. Are you renting a home? Facing foreclosure? You need a roadmap to get you where you need to go. And as usual, providing personal finance advice, real estate advice and consumer advice on the Ilyce Glink Show on September 23, 2012 at 12:00 Eastern Time on WSB Radio.

Your financial future will be decided by your success in creating vision. You have to have a roadmap, a path, a basic plan designed to take you where you want to go. The plan can change as life does, but if you don’t develop a concrete image of what you want with a rough strategy for arriving at it, you’re going to get stuck. You will never get there.

Let’s talk about homeownership and the housing market in particular. Studies show that young people renting a home imagine themselves transitioning to buyers someday. However distant daydreaming isn’t a real path forward. That’s not creating vision. It’s not a concrete strategy with steps and takeaways.

The same ideology applies to real estate investment. It’s a nice idea, but have you found the dream team that is going to help you make it happen? Have you created a roadmap for success? Have you done anything to move the talk forward into action?

I have a friend who I saw at a reunion last night. Her mom is stuck in a house she can’t afford. She’s underwater in her investment. My friend wants to help her mother, who is more than ready to throw in the towel. The answer to her dilemma, locating a great attorney who can facilitate a deed in lieu of foreclosure, isn’t tough, but helping her mother in creating vision, in developing a tangible plan to let go of this energy and resource depleting home, has taken way too long.

Creating vision is about more than waiting for the answers to come to you in the middle of the night. It’s a skill you can develop. Take out a blank piece of paper and a pen, an empty slate. You get to draw or write anything you want. What do you desire from the housing market and the world of investment?

What are your goals? What are your dreams? Are you dreaming big enough? Remember, when you’re stuck, even a step backward is a step in the right direction because you’re moving again. You’re creating momentum. Callers and I discuss the ways they are creating vision in their financial lives.
