Unwanted Mortgage And Credit Solicitations

REM #A665

By Ilyce R. Glink

Summary: A reader is looking for a way to get rid of unwanted mortgage and credit solicitations. Ilyce helps out with the phone number to call and the website to access.

Q: A few weeks ago in your column, you gave a phone number to opt out of unwanted mortgage and credit solicitations that wasn’t working.

Can you give us the right number?

A: I’m glad you asked.

According to the website PrivacyRights.org, when the Fair Credit Reporting Act was amended in 1996, it required that credit reporting bureaus provide consumers with the ability to opt out of having their names and addresses sold to credit grantors for marketing solicitations.

If you don’t want your personal information sold, and you’d like to cut down on the number of junk mail solicitations you receive, call 888-5optout, or (888) 567-8688.

This phone number leads to an automated opt-out system. For more information on this law, try www.privacyrights.org.
