With Hurricane season here and folks still drying out from the recent Northeast flooding, it’s a great reminder why it’s so important to have flood insurance, even if you don’t live anywhere near the ocean.

The risks of your home flooding are real: According to FloodSmart.gov, you have a 26 percent chance of having a flood over 30 years compared to a 9 percent risk of a fire. And a quarter of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program are for homes located in low-to-moderate risk areas.

The changing climate means flood maps are being redrawn for nearly every community. Just because you didn’t use to live in a flood zone doesn’t mean you don’t live in one now. Check your flood zone at your local village or town hall.

Flood insurance costs around $400 per year for up to $250,000 in coverage plus $100,000 in contents coverage. Find out more at FloodSmart.gov.
