Typical Broker Commission Rates

Added March 23, 2009 by Ilyce R. Glink

Summary: The average commission for a real estate broker is 5.1 percent of the transaction. If a home is difficult to sell, you’ll usually pay a higher commission. One option is to try selling the home yourself and saving on a seller’s commission all together.

It is my understanding that the commissions in the real estate note brokering industry range from 2 to 8 percent of the transaction amount. Is this right? I welcome your thoughts/comments at your convenience.

A: The average commission is about 5.1 percent. If the house is difficult to sell (or the agent perceives it will be), you'll typically pay a higher commission. You can also pay a lot less by trying to sell it yourself. I have a lot of information on the www.thinkglink.com website that addresses this. Check it out.
