Do you have funds in a credit union? Wondering if they're as safe as FDIC-insured banks?

Credit Unions have insurance for deposit accounts that is very similar to FDIC insurance. Here's the link to a calculator to tell you whether your funds are safe.

I just discovered a 20% interest certificate of deposit in the Philippines. Website is http://themoneymakers.org/englishindex.html
It's PDIC insured, something similar to the FDIC. But I wonder if it's really safe: Can the poor Philippine government really pay if a bank goes bankrupt?? Comments are very welcome!

I don't know if this is a safe investment, but I think the old adage applies: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Twenty percent on your money in any economy is insanely wonderful -- but in this economy, it's really suspect.

Want to Know If Your Bank is FDIC or FSLIC Insured?

Brian called the show and wanted to know how to figure out if a bank really is FDIC insured. It's easy, go online to www.fdic.gov or call the FDIC toll-free 877-ASK-FDIC.
