Magic Jack and more!

Are you sick of paying huge cable bills? What if you deconstructed what you pay for (phone, TV, Internet) and started to look at unusual ways of accessing the content you want through technology?

Loads of WSB listeners have been trying Magic Jack (www.magicjack.com; $40 for the first year, $20 per year after that)and found it much less expensive than paying the phone company $40 per month (or more) for local or long-distance service. When it comes to TV, you can watch so much of your regularly programming online. Try sites like Sling.com, and Hulu.com. Or, go to the website of your favorite shows and see what's playing there.

You might also want to look at Google.com/talk, iCall.com, YahooVoice, Skype, and others.

What's your favorite site to consumer content? How do you save on your cable/tv/phone bill?

Voltaic Green: Check out this video on Solar Backpacks

Imagine charging up your technology while walking to school. The new solar backpack (they're making solar-powered briefcases as well) from VoltaicGreen.com is pretty cool.

Updating from March 8, 2007 Clark Howard Show

Want to save money on gas? Check out www.cheapskateshopping.com. The website bills itself as being "professional cheapskates" and they have great information on various credit cards that give you cash back and other deals when you purchase gas (and other items).

For those of you wondering about that new piece of equipment from Sony that turns videotapes into DVDs, it's the Sony DVDirect VRD-MC3 and it costs $218. Check it out online at www.sony.com.

Inman Connect in New York

Right after the show, I'll be hopping on a plane (first trip for 2007, for those of you keeping track at home of my air miles) to New York. I'm attending Inman's Connect 2007 in Manhattan and I'll be staying at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, just where the ball was dropped a week ago.

At this conference, I'll be talking about Video on Demand for the Internet which, as many of your know, if a subject near and dear to my heart. If you're interested in learning more about the conference, find out about it at www.inman.com.

I'll be in New York until Wednesday night, but I'll try to Blog about the cool real estate technology that's being introduced -- the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) is also this week, so I'll see what I can find out and post here about that show even though I'll be in New York.

Have a great week.

This is the information regarding taxes on Soc Sec Benefits

IRS TAX TIP 2006-30

How much, if any, of your Social Security benefits are taxable depends on your total income and marital status. Generally, if Social Security benefits were your only income, your benefits are not taxable and you probably do not need to file a federal income tax return

If you received income from other sources, your benefits will not be taxed unless your modified adjusted gross income is more than the base amount for your filing status. Your taxable benefits and modified adjusted gross income are figured in a worksheet in the Form 1040A or Form 1040 Instruction Booklet.

Before you go to the instruction book, do the following quick computation to determine whether some of your benefits may be taxable:

• First, add one–half of the total Social Security you received to all your other income, including any tax exempt interest and other exclusions from income.
• Then, compare this total to the base amount for your filing status.

The 2005 base amounts are:

• $32,000 for married couples filing jointly
• $25,000 for single, head of household, qualifying widow/widower with a dependent child or married individuals filing separately who did not live with their spouses at any time during the year
• $0 for married persons filing separately who lived together during the year
