Stocks are shares of companies traded on a stock exchange such as the New York Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ. Stocks are one part of a diversified portfolio which may also include bonds, mutual funds, money market funds and other types of assets such as real estate. When a company is publicly traded it issues shares of stock. Stocks are often categorized by the size of the company into blue chips and small caps.
